I have an old computer that runs Warcraft 3 fine when it’s not online.
But when it is online it is really bad.

If your computer does have a separate internet connection, look up instructions for setting up connection sharing. It’s pretty easy to do, but beyond the scope of my answer.

If I’m understanding you right. You have 2 computers. One we’ll call A. The other B. Both computers have wireless cards. And one let’s say A is connected to the internet. If it’s set up like that and computer B connects to computer A by wireless. Then yes both computers can have internet access. But if computer A is turned off.

Computer B will no longer have connection to the internet. You just have to tell computer A to ‘Share this connection’ with other computers. And you have to set up computer B to use it’s wireless to connect to the internet through A.

you don’t have to but the company general recommends buying related software.
I would suggest you at least get a wireless-N type card they are better than a wireless-G card. Wireless-N also has greater range & better connection speeds. Other than that it doesn’t matter what company makes the card but most of the time when the company on both products match you’ll get a better connection.

I have a Linksys wireless card & have a heck of a time connecting to a neighbor’s Netgear wireless network until I bought my own Linksys router & installed it on my sister’s computer that was connected to the modem. Which I also made password protected.

It sounds like you do not currently have a router, perhaps just the modem for cable or DSL. If you get a wire router you can operate several computers by wire. Ethernet wires can be very long and can be found almost anywhere, including Home Depot. Look around to see if it is possible to run a wire down the heating duct or some other way that can be hidden.
If not you need a wifi router and a wifi adapter for the computer that is downstairs.. These help connect wirelessly, but walls and floors, 2.4mhz wireless phones, appliances etc can block the signal so it might work well or it might not work very well. There are antennas called High Gain antennas that really make a big difference so try to get a router and adapter that can use these types of antennas.

you can unplug your computer and plug in your laptop, or go and buy a $15 wireless router, you might also see if there is any unprotected wireless signals coming from a nearby neighbors house and bum off them until you get your own router.

-You need to log in to your router (usually 192.168.1.1 in your internet browser).
-Locate the encryption settings (refer to your router’s documentation) and use either WPA or WPA2 (never use WEP), then update your devices that use the connection.

Set this on your router. There will be security settings. Use WPA2 if you have that option. WEP is considered a trivial security method these days and can be cracked in minutes.
